There are 2 types of Akita dogs: Japanese Akita and American Akita. The easiest different between these two is look at their muzzles.


Japanese Akita has white muzzle while American Akita has black muzzle. Both of them are descended from the same ancestor in Japan. Akita Inu is mostly referring as Japanese Akita which is also called as "The Great Japanese Dog".

Akita is a big and powerful dog. They can be quiet and have strong guiding instinct which makes them good watch dogs. You have to supervise these dogs with small children because they can be aggressive sometime. You also have to be cautious when your Akita joins with other dogs. A fight could have happened. But, with the right Akita training techniques, you can tame this animal. Be sure to house training your Akita puppy if you have more than 1 dog in your house, and this training shall be able to stop the dog fighting problem.

Akita is also an affectionate dog that always wags his cute tail that curls over his back when he is around his owner. He also has muscular back legs that enable him to stand upright.

Akita is an alert and powerful dog that is good as a guard dog. They have the tendency to be jealous with other dogs, especially same sex. So, just beware of the likelihood of a fight. But, they are loyal and affectionate dogs to their owner.

History and Origins
Akita's ancestor is the Matagi dog which is one of the oldest of the native dogs from Japan. As per their name, they are from northernmost region of the island of Honshu in the Akita area. During World War II, the number of Akita dogs were greatly diminished because of the lack of food and were captured for their fur. After the war, people have put effort to produce more litters to increase the numbers. Some of the dogs were imported to USA.

Group
Akita, together with Doberman PInscher Dog Breed, Husky Dog Breed and Pit Bull Dog Breed, is categorized as working group in American Kennel Club (AKC).

Different from the above three dog breeds, Akita is placed under the utility group in The Kennel Club (UK), while they are in working group.

Living Condition
Akita will do better if you house has a yard. But, they will be doing fine too in an apartment or a condominium if they are given enough daily exercise.

Exercise
Every dog needs to exercise. This is especially true to a dog like Akita as they have a lot of energy. Exercise is also important to make sure that these dogs stay fit.

You may always conduct Akita training after the exercise. You may surprise that your Akita will learn better after exercise.

Shedding
These dogs will shed seasonally, twice a year. However, the care of brushing and grooming is easy as they are short-coated.

General Appearance
Akita has a large body and massive head. Muzzle is broad and full with white fur. Neck is thick and muscular. Ears are erect and triangle-shaped. Eyes are dark brown or black. Tail is large, full with fur and curve over back.

Coat and Color
It is double coated. Any color including white, brindle, or pinto.

Size
Height: 24.0 - 28.0 inches (61.0 - 71.1 cm)
Weight: 75.0 - 119.0 pounds (34.0 - 54.0 kg)

Average Life Span
11 - 15 years

Litter Size
3 - 12 puppies

Characteristics/Temperaments and Energy level
These dogs are always in alert and responsive mode. They are sensitive with sound and can be good guard dogs. They also have the courageous characteristics from their ancestors which were used to be hunting dogs.

Akitas get jealous easily by other dogs, particularly of the same sex. A fight could have happened if there are other dogs in your house. So, in order for you to have a well-balanced Akita in your house, you should conduct the Akita training at your house with patient.

"American Akita Inu Training Tips"

Training your Akita is definitely a rewarding experience for both you and your puppy. During the Akita training, you will discover that you will develop unbelievable strong bond between you and your dog. You may find out that your Akita will be good student as long as you equip the right skills to communicate well with him.

It is important to start the dog training as early as possible but it never too late to learn at anytime as long as you are willing to put effort.

Since Akita can be jealous easily, conduct puppy socialization is the key to develop a well-balanced Akita in later years. He should meet different people and different animals with your presence to learn how to socialize with them.

After your Akita has good social activities, you should obedience training your Akita. This is to make sure that your dog always listens to your commands.
