"Cesar Millan - The Dog Whisperer Season 1 Episode 1-5"

Cesar Millan is the dog behavior specialist who is more known for his television series "The Dog Whisperer".


Here in this page, I would like to introduce you to the first season of the dog whisperer while sharing what I have learned from him. If you haven't watched the dog whisperer, I really encourage you to get his DVDs as you will learn very important tips and techniques. If you have watched it before, this page will be a good refresher lesson.

Episode 1: Nunu and Kane (Demon Chihuahua and the Shinny)

Dog Breed Info: Chihuahua
Name: Nunu
Owner: Tina Madden

Dog Behavior Problems: Nunu has dog biting problem and is very protective of Tina and he attacks anyone who get nears Tina. Nunu has a weak state of mind and nervous. Tina has unknowingly given him affection during the wrong time which has nurtured that state of mind and slowly developed a dominant behavior.

Dog Behavior Modification: Cesar Millan breaks his attacking behavior in a very short time by giving Nunu smells him first without looking at Nunu. Nunu feels his calm assertive energy which is the characteristic of a pack leader. Nunu goes nuts when Tina put Nunu on his leg; Cesar calmly holds Nunu without backing up and this has stop the puppy from biting him Cesar explains that if he runs away, it only will intensify his unwanted behavior. Next, Cesar teaches Tina how to master the walk which is very important step as a pack leader.

Owners: Mariana Dahlen and Emmett Dahlen

Dog Behavior Problems: A year ago, Kane ran through a hallway and slipped on a shiny floor before hitting himself on a glass door. Since then, Kane refuses to walk on any shinny surfaces includes linoleum floor and wet street.

Dog Behavior Modification: Cesar says that they are giving affection at the wrong time which is nurturing Kane's trauma. Cesar walks with Kane to create a quick bond. Then, Cesar walks with Kane toward the shinny floor but it fails because Kane refuses to enter. The Second time, Cesar walks faster to use Kane's momentum to enter the room. Kane has very difficult time when he was in the room and Cesar gives him time to adjust himself. In just a couple of minutes, Kane is able to walk on the shinny floor.


Episode 2: Opie and Flirt

Name: Opie
Owner: Suzanne Ohanesian

Dog Behavior Problems: When Suzanne takes Opie for a walk on leash, Opie will bark at other dogs aggressively. Opie even directs the aggressive behavior and frustration at Suzanne and bites her.

Dog Behavior Modification: Cesar Millan corrects Suzanne for giving Opie exercise and affection but missing something important which is discipline. Cesar then has a walk with Opie while assists by his wife (Illusion) to walk on the opposite way with another dog. When Opie shows a little sign of the barking behavior, Cesar corrects Opie by pulling the leash up and with the "Shhhh" command. After a short moment, he walks with Opie and also the dog which Illusion carries previously. Cesar corrects Opie by directing the attention to him rather than the dog. Everything goes well until the next day when Suzanne was bitten by Opie again, she calls Cesar Millan for help. Suzanne show her walk with Opie and Cesar realizes that fearing is controlling her. Cesar says that it will take time and she needs to work on walking with confident and relax (not fear) and polish on the correction.

Name: Flirt
Owner: Barbie Orr

Dog Behavior Problems: Flirt is an overly friendly dog. She is a hyper active dog which is always extremely excited with new people or new things. Besides that, Flirt's act is actually damaging herself physically because she always pulls her leash when she is trying to get to people.

Dog Behavior Modification: Cesar says that Barbie has a hyper active dog. He also says that Barbie has exercise with Flirt but she does not control of the exercise. Dog should walks beside human not in front. Cesar recommends that Barbie to provide exercise with consistent discipline. Cesar also suggests Barbie practice relaxation activities for herself because people needs to change first before change her dog. Cesar takes a walk with Flirt and she is able to walk calmly without present of Barbie. Cesar Millan also challenges Flirt by talking to a new person on street. Flirt does not show any sign of hyper active. Cesar further takes one of his dogs and Flirt does not show any unwanted behavior as well. Cesar asks Barbie to join once seeing Flirt is calm.


Episode 3: Ruby and Rana (Scared Family Dog and Make Room for Rana)

Name: Ruby
Owners: Larry Klein, Ann Klein, Lexi Klein and Zach Klein

Dog Behavior Problems: Ruby has dog food aggression problem and biting problem. She constantly chew things such as cloth and they do not know how to stop the dog chewing behavior She is scared of strangers, water and camera. She is extremely possessive of her food, toys and treats. Ruby is fearful of her life.

Dog Behavior Modification: Cesar Millan says that there is no leadership in the family as Ruby was able to do whatever she wants whenever she does mistake. Cesar further explains that no matter what is the thing her mouth, when human wants it back, the dog must release. The family also not consistent on what the Ruby can chew and not to chew. They also give affection to Ruby when the mind is unsure, so they are nurturing insecurity state of mind. Cesar Millan walks with Ruby in the house by walking toward the camera by forcing her to face her fear. Larry is amazed when he is able to take a picture of Ruby. Next, Cesar wants to challenge her possessiveness. Ruby bites Cesar on his hand but Cesar does not back away to give Ruby in control. Cesar alsp helps Ruby conquers the fear of water by bringing her to the swimming pool.

Owners: Karen Adams, Alanna Adams

Dog Behavior Problems: When Rana hears the sound of toaster or microwave sound, she goes frenzy. Rana also has issue with phone. He will start barking whenever the phone is answered.

Dog Behavior Modification: Cesar Millan says that the lack of information might causes the instability of dog. Karen admits that it is her fault for baby Rana by giving him whatever he wants. Cesar gives them advice that they have to change their habits. Cesar Millan bring the toaster towards Rana and force Rana to deal with the toaster sound. This teaches Rana NOT to be nervous, afraid or anxious. After a while, Karen bring Rana on leash and he is already submissive with the sound of the toaster. Rana does not bark at microwave sound and also when Karen answers her phone. This has stopped the dog excessive barking problem.


Episode 4: Boomer and Josh (The Yap Dog and the Grooming Gremlin)

Name: Boomer
Owners: Jody Sherman and Kristy Thom

Dog Behavior Problems: Boomer is a very playful dog, for him, play time is every time. He is always trying to get attention from his owners. Boomer always throws his toy under sofa or desk and barks at it to get attention. Neighbor is frustrated with Boomer's barking sound at late at night.

Dog Behavior Modification: Cesar Millan gives them advice to have choke chain on Boomer which can gains control over him. In same time, the most important is sharing calm-assertive energy. Cesar also suggests them to bring Boomer for a walk daily and be consistent in leash training which can give them power.

Name: Josh
Owner: Ronette Thomlinson

Dog Behavior Problems: Josh does not allow anyone to groom him. He will bark and bite anyone who tries to brush or cut his hair. Josh barks and growls at everyone including those that he knows (Ronette's daughter Trish and her husband). Josh has bitten Trish's friend before.

Dog Behavior Modification: Cesar Millan says that everyone in the family has to be the pack leader or authority figure of Josh. Cesar further clarifies that most of the activities that Ronette does to Josh is based on affection which nurture his bad behavior. Ronette wants Cesar to help with grooming first. Before the grooming, Cesar takes Josh for a walk. Josh is very nervous and insecure when walking. Cesar is trying to show that he is more dominant then Josh which will help in grooming. Cesar Millan uses a brush to brush his hair and Josh allows it. When Cesar tries to take off her leash, he charges at him and bites his fingers. Cesar does not back away to show that he is still in charge. Josh tries to put up a fight many times during grooming and Cesar keeps on grooming him. Finally, Josh allows them to trim his hair.


Episode 5: Harry and Brooks (Hell on Wheels and Bright Lights – Big Problem)

Dog Breed Info: German Shepherd Mix
Name: Harry
Owners: Beverly Keeley and Janet Parker

Dog Behavior Problems: Harry turns aggressive to anything on wheels, such as bikes and skateboards. He even chased and bit his neighbor's son before. Beverly and Janet find it difficult to handle Harry on leash because he pulls badly with his German Shepherd's powerful strength.

Dog Behavior Modification: When talking with Beverly and Janet, Cesar finds that Harry is anxious and fearful which slowly makes him become dominant and aggressive. Cesar and Harry go for a walk and Harry submits to Cesar in a very short while. Cesar asks his sons to help him by riding on bicycle and also skateboard and Cesar corrects Harry as soon as he tries to change his attention. Then, Cesar Millan and Harry stand in front of the front yard and his sons and wife go on various wheeled vehicles and pass in front of the house. Cesar uses combination of choke chain, his leg "torch" and command "Shhh" to Harry when he shows any early sign of barking. The German Shepherd is trained not to bark as wheels.

entlebucher brooks dog whisperer season1 episode5

Dog Breed Info: Entlebucher (Swiss Mountain Dog)
Name: Brooks
Owners: Lorain and Chuck Nicholson

Dog Behavior Problems: When Brooks is a puppy, he was taught to chase the laser light on the floor. Since then, he became obsessed with finding the light on the floor or wall. He is 5 years old now and he has been searching for light constantly for 5 years. Brooks's problem is not limited to laser light only. It can be any light like flash light, reflection of a watch, sunshine that hitting something shinny or even a butterfly's shadow.

Dog Behavior Modification: Cesar Millan talks to them and finds that Brooks was insecure when he was a puppy and further became nervous break down. And Brooks thinks that light is the end of his nervous break down and light gives him confident to move forward and makes him strong. With the light, Harry becomes dominant one in very obsess way. Cesar said the Harry is in the "Red Zone" and could be difficult to correct. Cesar further says that they have to create activities for Harry so that he can practice calm-submissive first. Cesar suggest that they start to use a leash again when walking and conditions Harry's to look up like normal dog. Cesar Millan corrects Harry for a while and he cooperates and looks upward. When they are inside the house, they work on the light fixation by correcting him when he tries to follow the light. Within a few minutes, Brooks is sitting and focusing on Chuck and Lorain rather than chasing the light, and they realize that if they work with Brooks as directed, he'll be much happier.
