Cocker Spaniel dog breed is a medium size family dog that always wears a happy face.

This dog has other names like English Cocker Spaniel, Cocker, or Merry Cocker. Their closest cousin is American Cocker Spaniel. They are active sporting dogs that used to help people in hunting. They are used as hunting dogs because of their eagerness of retrieving things when under command. But nowadays, most of the cockers are family pets.

History and Origins
There were 2 types of spaniels in England: land spaniels and water spaniels about 500 years ago. The spaniels that we are seeing today begin during mid 1800s. During this time the spaniels have been categorized based on weights. There were many types of spaniel were recorded between 1850s and 1900s which including Cocker. In 1936, English Cocker and American Cocker have been separated into different group.

Group
Cocker Spaniel, together with Golden Retriever dog breed, has been categorized as Sporting Group in American Kennel Club (AKC) and Gun Dog Group in The Kennel Club (UK).

Living Condition
This dog will be ok to live in an apartment or a condominium place. It will be better if they are staying in a house with a yard so that there are spaces for them to run around.

Exercise
All dogs needs exercise. This especially applies to Cockers that have a lot of energy. You should take him for a 45 minute daily walk to keep him fit.

Shedding
Cocker Spaniel shed from time to time. You will need to brush him regularly so that the hair will not be all around the places.

Cocker Spaniel is friendly and gentle. That is what makes them good family dogs that will do well with children. These dogs have carried their ancestors' temperaments which are hunting dogs. So, they are eager to work and bold.

They can be lively and playful sometime. But with enough exercise, they will not cause trouble at home. Sometime when you see your cocker is hyperactive, that's mean you need to take him out for more exercise.
