Lhasa Apso's name is in Tibet language. Lhasa is the capital city of Tibet and Apso is a word in the Tibetan language meaning "bearded," so its name simply means "long-haired Tibetan dog."

History and Origins
Lhasa Apso Dogs are originating in Tibet. They were bred as an interior sentinel in the Buddhist monasteries, who alerted the monks to any intruders who entered.

The breed standard currently used by the American Kennel Club was approved on July 11, 1978.

Group
Lhasa Apso, same with
Boston Terrier dog breed, is categorized under Non-sporting Group in American Kennel Club (AKC) and Utility Group in The Kennel Club (UK).

Another member of small dogs which is placed under Utility group is Shih Tzu dog breed.

Living Condition
Lhasa is good in living an apartment life that without a yard. Overall, they are active indoor animal.

Exercise
Remember that all dogs need exercise. Play time indoor should not be a replacement for exercise outdoor. They are two different activities. You should take him for a 45 minute walk daily to drain his energy.

Shedding
This is an average shedding dog breed. So, it needs some fair amount of grooming weekly to make its coat smoothly and beautifully.

When you take a look at this breed, they look like having a heavy head with narrow skull. They have dark brown eyes with a black nose. Muzzle is usually medium size and their ears are hanging and heavily feathered. Feet are well feathered too and round-shaped.

Coat and Color
Its coat is heavy, straight, hard, neither woolly nor silky, and very dense. Colors include white, golden, rust and parti-colored with various shadings.

Lhasas can change color as they get older, starting with a dark brown coat which gradually turns lighter.

Lhasa is a friendly and lively dog breed. They are also affectionate to their owner but not necessarily like to please their owners. This breed is loyal to its owner, is obedient and is intelligent.

Lhasa is alert with a keen sense of hearing and is wary of strangers. Sometimes, they will become nervous with children as well. So, they are lack of trust with new people and children.
