History and Origins
The Mastiff name was probably evolved from the Anglo-Saxon word "masty", meaning "powerful". The Mastiff is descended from the ancient Alaunt and Molosser and is recognized as the oldest British dog breed. They were mainly bred for bear-baiting, bull-baiting, dog fighting, and lion-baiting until 1835 where there was a law to prohibit the baiting of animals. Mastiffs were still continued their role as guard and watch dogs.

Group
Mastiff, same with Newfoundland Dog and Pit Bull Terrier, has been recognized by both American Kennel Club (AKC) and The Kennel Club as Working Group.

Living Condition
Due to the huge size of Mastiff, it is recommended to have this dog breed if you have a house with a yard.

Exercise
Mastiff needs daily exercise to keep fit. If not they will develop dog health issues in later years.

Shedding
This dog breed does not shed much. They are easy to be groomed as they are smooth-coated.

Mastiff is a big size dog, so you should plan your Mastiff Puppy Training carefully. Here are some dog training tips for you.

If you are bringing a new Mastiff puppy home, you should start with potty training. The potty training is important to make sure that your dog will not mess up your house. During the potty training, you should use a single training command such as "Go Potty" to associate his act of eliminating. With repetition for a few days, he will learn the designated elimination location and also your command.

Next, you can teach some basic dog obedience training command such as "Sit", "Stay" and "Come". These few commands are important, you may use "Sit" before you are giving him the food bowl. You may train him to "Stay" and "Come" during play time.

Remember that food treats are always the best method to intensify your dog behavior. So, use it every time during the training.
