Papillon means butterfly in French. It gets its name because of its very large, butterfly-like ears.
It is a small, friendly, elegant breed of dog and is one of the oldest of the toy Spaniels.
It has other names like Phalene, Continental Toy Spaniel, Epagneul Nain Continental, Butterfly Dog and Squirrel Dog.

History and Origins
The earliest toy spaniels resembling the Continental Toy Spaniel are found in Italy around 1500.
Theses Continental Toy Spaniels are also in paintings of royal families around Europe and paintings of merchant class families.
The breed was popular in England, France, and Belgium.
It was not until the end of the 19th century that the erect-eared appearance became fashionable and gave the breed's modern name,
Papillon, French for "butterfly".
This breed was first recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1935.
In the United States, erect-eared and drop-eared (Phalene) can be born in the same litter and are shown together as one breed.

and Maltese Dog Breed,
Papillon dog breed is recognized as Toy Group

Living Condition
Papillon might not be a good apartment dogs compare with other small dog breeds.
The reason is that this breed could bark excessively and might disturb the neighbor.
But, if you know the right way to obedience train this breed, you can still love peacefully in apartment.
Exercise
Of course, Papillon needs exercise too. You can walk him for a 45 minutes morning walk before you go to work.
If there is no exercise, I afraid he will use his energy on other things such as biting your furniture, your shoes and your favorite dress.
So, with sufficient exercise, your papillon puppy should stop biting your household.
Shedding
All dog sheds including Papillon dog breed. If you think that your dog seems like shed too much, it could develop dog skin problems.
