These dogs have many names such as Pit bull or American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT).


Pit Bull dog breed is normally refered as several breeds of dog in the Molosser family such as American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. These dogs have bad reputation because of some incidents caused by some un-balanced aggressive Pit Bulls.

Pit bull is another powerful dog breed that is NOT for everyone. Pit bull can be dominant and aggressive if you do not know how to train them properly. So, I advise you to get this breed only if you have the strength and in-depth knowledge in pit bull puppy training.

Actually, APBT is a dog breed that is loyal to the family if it is well-trained. If you introduce to your pit bull to strangers in a good manner, your pitbull can be friendly to them too.

History and Origins
During 1800s, people in England, Ireland, and Scotland tried to experiment the crosses between bulldogs and terriers. They were looking for a powerful dog that combined the gameness of the terrier with the strength and athleticism of the bulldog. Thus, the outcome is Pit Bull.

In early 1900s, the United Kennel Club from the United States of America began the registration of an American Pit Bull Terrier. The dog was bred first to bait bulls and bears. The dog was used during World War I and World War II as a way of delivering messages on the battlefield.

Group
American Pit Bull Terrier is first recognized by United Kennel Club (UKC) in Terrier Group.

While American Staffordshire Terrier is recognized by American Kennel Club (AKC) in Terrier Group and Staffordshire Bull Terrier is placed by The Kennel Club (UK) also in Terrier Group.

Living Condition
Pitbulls will do ok in an apartment if you provide them enough exercise. It is better if there is a yard in your house for them to run around.

Exercise
Every dogs needs exercise. You have to walk pit bull for at least 45 minutes daily if you do not want your dog to develop any behavior problems.

You may continue with the Pit Bull puppy training after the exercise. Exercise helps to drain some of your Pit Bull's energy and he will be more mentally-prepared for your training.

Shedding
Pit Bull is smooth-coated that is easy to care. They are average shedder.

General Appearance
These bid dogs have muscular body and have great strength. The head is medium in size and eyes are dark and round. Neck is heavy with strong shoulder. Tail is short and legs are muscular.

Coat and Color
They have short smooth coat and can be in any color.

Size
Height: 18.0 - 22.0 inches (46.0 - 56.0 cm)
Weight: 30.0 - 60.0 pounds (14.0 - 27.0 kg)

Pitbull is almost the same size with Siberian Husky and Border Collie but it is much more powerful than these 2 dog breeds.

Average Life Span
9 - 12 years

Litter Size
5 - 10 puppies

Characteristics/Temperaments and Energy level
Pit Bulls are courageous and strong dogs. These characteristics have made them as war dogs long time ago. This dog has high energy. If his energy does not go away will develop dog behavior problem such as dog to dog aggression or bark aggressively at people. So, exercise is a MUST.

They are also intelligent and are known to succeeding in obedience training (See: Puppy Obedience Training), house training (See: House Training a Puppy) and agility training. They are affectionate to their owners and people close to them. But, they remain cautious to strangers.

As you know that Pit Bull were initially developed for "Bull Fight" and war dogs, so, training a pit bull is NOT an option.

Pit bull Puppy Training should be conducted by a strong and assertive pack leader. This is because Pit bull has enormous strength that normal people are unable to handle. And, Pit Bull will only listen to assertive pack leader. There were many Pit Bulls reported to be overly aggressive because the owners lack of leadership.

Early puppy socialization of your Pit bull will be helping him to get comfortably with different people and different animals. But, it is never too late to help you dog because dog lives at the moment. They will change as long as your provide the proper guidance.
